1) How would you reflect on the development of Thaksin University’s Phatthalung campus?

I discovered TSU’s Phatthalung campus through research.

Fifteen years ago, I was impressed by the quality of the research work presented by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Jompob, from the Faculty of Engineering, at an international conference in Scotland.

We have since been collaborating on research and innovation work in renewable energy resource assessments, the energy transition, and energy policies.

My regular presences at the Phatthalung campus over the last 15 years allowed me to be a spectator of the development of the campus.  In one word, “growth” is the word that defines this campus.

The Phatthalung campus has devoted Faculty members and supporting staff providing advanced knowledge and higher education in relevant areas, thus offering a multitude of degrees leading to excellent employment opportunities.  From our research group, I can single out Dr. Pranee Nutongkaew, a Carbon Credit Certification Officer at the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO) and Dr. Lattawan Niyomtham, an engineer working in an international company installing and operating wind energy power plants in Thailand.

The student population has access to Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. degrees in various fields of knowledge.  Every year, more students attend the Phatthalung campus, with increasing diversity and a growing international student population, mainly from China and the ASEAN countries.

The students appear to be happy.  When I see them in hallways, in one of the coffee shops on campus, at 7-Eleven, students appear to be happy, joyful, and all are smiling.  Thailand is indeed the land of smiles!

Behind the colorful facades of the buildings, the campus infrastructure is also sustaining important growth.  New faculties are constructed, world-class research labs are developed, meeting and networking facilities are implemented, and numerous well-being and sporting facilities are built.  While scooters are present on campus, I notice that the walking and bicycle paths are increasingly being used by the student population, indicating a shift in active mode of transportation on campus.

The campus also has important impacts in the development of the local community and southern Thailand in general.  Next to the Phatthalung campus, its host community, Pa Phayom, is also sustaining important growth in response to the needs of the campus.  A vibrant ecosystem has been created with the local communities and the people surrounding the campus.

From its modest origin as a university campus situated in a rural area, the Phatthalung campus of Thaksin University has grown to become a genuine, dynamic, and modern university campus.

 

1. ท่านมีมุมมองต่อการพัฒนาของมหาวิทยาลัยทักษิณ วิทยาเขตพัทลุง อย่างไร

ผมรู้จักมหาวิทยาลัยทักษิณ วิทยาเขตพัทลุง ผ่านงานวิจัย เมื่อประมาณ 15 ปีก่อน ผมมีโอกาสเข้าร่วมการประชุมวิชาการนานาชาติที่ประเทศสกอตแลนด์ และได้ประทับใจในคุณภาพของผลงานวิจัยที่นำเสนอโดย รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร. จอมภพ จากคณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยทักษิณ นับตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา เราได้ร่วมมือกันดำเนินงานวิจัยและนวัตกรรมในด้านการประเมินศักยภาพทรัพยากรพลังงานหมุนเวียน การเปลี่ยนผ่านด้านพลังงาน และนโยบายพลังงานอย่างต่อเนื่อง

ตลอดระยะเวลา 15 ปีที่ผ่านมา ผมได้เดินทางมายังวิทยาเขตพัทลุงเป็นประจำ และมีโอกาสเห็นพัฒนาการของมหาวิทยาลัยอย่างใกล้ชิด หากจะอธิบายการเปลี่ยนแปลงของที่นี่ด้วยคำเพียงคำเดียว คำนั้นคือ “การเติบโต”

วิทยาเขตพัทลุงมีคณาจารย์และบุคลากรสายสนับสนุนที่มีความมุ่งมั่นในการถ่ายทอดองค์ความรู้และจัดการศึกษาระดับอุดมศึกษาในสาขาที่มีความสำคัญต่อการพัฒนาประเทศ เปิดโอกาสให้นิสิตได้รับการศึกษาที่มีคุณภาพและสามารถนำไปสู่การประกอบอาชีพได้อย่างมีศักยภาพ

จากกลุ่มนักวิจัยที่ผมร่วมงานด้วย มีศิษย์เก่าหลายคนที่ประสบความสำเร็จในสายอาชีพ เช่น ดร. ปราณี ณุทองแก้ว เจ้าหน้าที่รับรองคาร์บอนเครดิตขององค์การบริหารจัดการก๊าซเรือนกระจก (องค์การมหาชน) และ ดร. ลัดดาวัลย์ นิยมธรรม วิศวกรในบริษัทระดับนานาชาติที่ดำเนินงานด้านการติดตั้งและบริหารจัดการโรงไฟฟ้าพลังงานลมในประเทศไทย

ปัจจุบัน วิทยาเขตพัทลุงเปิดสอนตั้งแต่ระดับปริญญาตรี ปริญญาโท และปริญญาเอก ครอบคลุมหลากหลายสาขาวิชา โดยในแต่ละปีมีจำนวนนิสิตเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง ทั้งนิสิตชาวไทยและนิสิตนานาชาติ โดยเฉพาะจากประเทศจีนและกลุ่มประเทศอาเซียน สิ่งที่ผมสังเกตเห็นเสมอคือ นิสิตที่นี่มีความสุข ไม่ว่าจะพบตามอาคารเรียน ร้านกาแฟภายในมหาวิทยาลัย หรือบริเวณร้านสะดวกซื้อ ทุกคนล้วนมีรอยยิ้มและบรรยากาศแห่งความเป็นมิตร ซึ่งสะท้อนถึงเอกลักษณ์ของประเทศไทยในฐานะ “ดินแดนแห่งรอยยิ้ม”

นอกจากการเติบโตทางด้านวิชาการแล้ว โครงสร้างพื้นฐานของมหาวิทยาลัยก็ได้รับการพัฒนาอย่างต่อเนื่อง มีการก่อสร้างอาคารและคณะใหม่ การพัฒนาห้องปฏิบัติการวิจัยระดับมาตรฐานสากล พื้นที่สำหรับการประชุมและสร้างเครือข่ายความร่วมมือ รวมถึงสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกด้านสุขภาวะและการกีฬา แม้ว่าจะยังมีการใช้รถจักรยานยนต์ภายในมหาวิทยาลัย แต่ผมสังเกตเห็นว่านิสิตหันมาใช้เส้นทางเดินเท้าและเส้นทางจักรยานมากขึ้น ซึ่งสะท้อนถึงแนวโน้มการเดินทางที่เป็นมิตรต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมและส่งเสริมสุขภาพ

มหาวิทยาลัยยังมีบทบาทสำคัญต่อการพัฒนาชุมชนโดยรอบ โดยเฉพาะอำเภอป่าพะยอม จังหวัดพัทลุง ซึ่งเติบโตควบคู่ไปกับการขยายตัวของมหาวิทยาลัย เกิดระบบนิเวศแห่งการพัฒนาร่วมกันระหว่างสถาบันการศึกษา ชุมชน และภาคส่วนต่าง ๆ ในพื้นที่ จากจุดเริ่มต้นของมหาวิทยาลัยที่ตั้งอยู่ในพื้นที่ชนบท วิทยาเขตพัทลุง ได้พัฒนาและเติบโตจนกลายเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยที่มีความทันสมัย มีชีวิตชีวา และมีบทบาทสำคัญต่อการพัฒนาภาคใต้ของประเทศไทย

2) In your view, how has the Phatthalung campus evolved over the years?

Mainly serving southern Thailand, Thaksin University is a relatively young university.  It is also the case for the Phatthalung campus.

I would characterize the Phatthalung campus as being in its teenager years.  Eager to learn, desire to discover, on the lookout to making a difference, proud to express its own identity, having big dreams.

One finds all these characteristics in the Phatthalung campus, making it an ideal higher education institution situated outside of the main, populous urban settings normally offered by other universities.

The Phatthalung campus of Thaksin University offers a world-class university environment, in a peaceful setting surrounded by nature.

2. ในมุมมองของท่าน วิทยาเขตพัทลุงมีพัฒนาการอย่างไรตลอดหลายปีที่ผ่านมา

มหาวิทยาลัยทักษิณเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยที่มีอายุไม่มากนักเมื่อเทียบกับมหาวิทยาลัยหลายแห่งในประเทศไทย และวิทยาเขตพัทลุงก็เช่นเดียวกัน หากเปรียบเทียบในเชิงสัญลักษณ์ ผมมองว่าวิทยาเขตพัทลุงกำลังอยู่ในช่วงวัยรุ่นที่เต็มไปด้วยพลังแห่งการเรียนรู้ ความกระตือรือร้นในการค้นพบสิ่งใหม่ ความมุ่งมั่นที่จะสร้างความแตกต่าง และความภาคภูมิใจในอัตลักษณ์ของตนเอง คุณลักษณะเหล่านี้ปรากฏให้เห็นอย่างชัดเจนในวิทยาเขตพัทลุง ทำให้ที่นี่เป็นสถาบันอุดมศึกษาที่มีความโดดเด่น แตกต่างจากมหาวิทยาลัยที่ตั้งอยู่ในเมืองใหญ่ มหาวิทยาลัยทักษิณ วิทยาเขตพัทลุง มอบสภาพแวดล้อมการเรียนรู้ในระดับสากล ท่ามกลางบรรยากาศที่สงบ รายล้อมด้วยธรรมชาติที่งดงาม และเอื้อต่อการพัฒนาศักยภาพของผู้เรียนอย่างแท้จริง

3) What vision or recommendations would you share for the future of the Phatthalung campus?

Be proud and remain relevant!

You have a marvelous campus, knowledgeable academic staff, devoted administration and support staff, offering unique education opportunities to a growing student population, from Thailand and abroad.

The academic programs are well aligned with the needs of highly qualified people to integrate into the job market and to make differences in developing sustainable communities and a strong country.

The Phatthalung campus is a pillar of Thaksin University.  Be proud of what is accomplished and the impacts that you collectively have on the development of southern Thailand, the country, and the ASEAN region.

3. ท่านมีวิสัยทัศน์หรือข้อเสนอแนะสำหรับอนาคตของวิทยาเขตพัทลุงอย่างไร
